Components of a Successful Recovery Tool Box

A process of changing the recovering addict’s life to match the level of change they want to see in their behavior patterns may be a positive step in maintaining a sober balance.
Rather than addiction recovery being limited to a 30, 60 or 90 day treatment period; it is an ongoing process that requires the right tools to help one live and maintain a sober life.

Some of the things that can help promote an easier road to sobriety are:

  • A solid support system, including ongoing individual and group counseling opportunities, is important for recovery. Communication with therapists is important, so that they can help the patient best respond to cravings and other stimuli that may lead to relapse.
  • Positive encouragement from family and friends. Communicating with family and friends about the difficulties that can occur after treatment can allow supporters to anticipate and navigate challenges with the patient. An opportunity for family members to attend professionally-staffed counseling sessions can also increase the chances of a smooth transition and resolutions for problems that may come up with the return of the recovering addict.
  • Regular fellowship meetings. Keeping in close contact with fellow recovering addicts can offer insight through interaction and sharing that might not otherwise be there.
  • Wellness resources to promote healthy habits. A community-based 12-step program offers the support, life direction and service to others that has helped many recovering addicts maintain their foothold in sobriety

There are other steps that can be taken to maximize the chances that treatment will be successful. An article featured in National Geographic: DRUGGED provides helpful tips for successful recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. The author cautioned that when treatment does not result in cessation of use, the patient must not look at the experience as a failure or a problem with willpower. Addiction is a disease, not a result of a lack of effort. And while there is no cure for addiction; management of addiction disorders can be successful.

The article also reinforced the need for patients to recognize that recovery is a one-day-at-a-time process. They should not allow past behaviors or fear associated with the recurrence of old habits to cast any negativity over the progress they have made. Therapists will often work with recovering addicts to help develop techniques for battling negative beliefs and feelings that may lead to relapse.

A process of changing the recovering addict’s life to match the level of change they want to see in their behavior patterns may be a positive step in maintaining a sober balance. For instance, a new environment, featuring new activities, friends and experiences can often help a patient begin anew, with positive, affirming surroundings.  The recovering addict is particularly encouraged to consider their friendships and identify those that can may facilitate addiction, rather than help with recovery. Friends that may jeopardize a recovery should be avoided.

No two recovering addicts are exactly alike. What tools work for one person; may not work for another. However, there is a long list of support tactics that can be beneficial to the recovering addict in maintaining their life of sobriety.

Obesity – More Than a Cosmetic Consideration

$

Men, women and even children may be at risk of a number of chronic diseases due to being grossly overweight.
Men, women and children who suffer from obesity often deal with prejudicial treatment from those around them.

Whether in the general public, work place or school grounds, those suffering from overweight problems often find a stigma attached to their physical presentation. However, obesity is not just a cosmetic consideration; it is a dire problem that plays significantly in harming one’s health. Our country suffers from roughly 112,000 deaths per year that are related to obesity. Most of these deaths were patients with a BMI over 30. For patients dealing with a BMI over 40, life expectancy is significantly reduced.

Men, women and even children may be at risk of a number of chronic diseases due to being grossly overweight. While obesity can have a major impact on the self-image and feelings of self-worth of an individual; their health can be at direct risk. Included in those diseases that can be a direct result of obesity or extreme overweight at the following:

Many obese patients suffer from insulin resistance. Insulin acts to transport blood glucose (sugar) into the body’s cells of muscle and fat for use as energy. By transporting glucose into the cells of the body’s muscle and fat, insulin keeps the body’s blood glucose levels in the normal range. Insulin resistance (IR) is a diminished capacity for the body’s insulin to transport an over-abundance of glucose into cells. As fat cells are more insulin resistant than muscle cells; the by-product of insulin resistance can thereby result in the problem of accumulated fat and obesity. The pancreas helps manage blood glucose levels by producing more insulin. However, once the pancreas is no longer able to keep up with producing high enough levels of insulin to effectively process the glucose levels in the blood; the body’s blood glucose levels begin to raise – a precursor to Type 2 diabetes.

The risk of Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes increases with the degree and duration of a patient’s obesity. Even children are now being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes problems – a disease that in the past has been considered an adult problem. Type 2 diabetes is associated with central obesity, wherein a patient carries excess fat around his or her waist. This body type has the form of an apple.

High blood pressure is common among obese adult men and women. A recent study in Norway found that weight gain tended to increase blood pressure in women more than in men. The risk of developing high blood pressure was also found to be higher in obese people who were apple shaped (central obesity) than in people who were pear shape (fat distributed mainly in the hips and thighs).

Obesity is typically accompanied with a high cholesterol condition and places patients at risk for strokes or heart attacks. The risk of developing coronary artery disease increased three to four times in women with a BMI greater than 29. A Finnish research study found that for every 2.2 pounds of body weight, the risk of death from coronary artery disease increased by one percent. For patients who have already had a heart attack, obesity indicated the increased likelihood of a second heart attack.

Additional medical problems that can be an extension of obesity include cancer – obesity has been linked to cancer of the colon, cancer of the rectum, prostate cancer in men, cancer of the gallbladder and uterus in women. Obesity may be a factor in breast cancer. Fat tissue is important in the production of estrogen; and prolonged exposure to high levels of estrogen may increase the risk of breast cancer. Gallstones, gout and gouty arthritis can also be linked to obesity, along with osteoarthritis of the knees, hips and lower back due pressure from excessive weight.

Questions to Pose When Choosing a Treatment Center

$

Be sure to check if medical detox is available through their program.
If you have a family member who is suffering from chemical addiction, professional treatment may be in order.

Locating the most effective treatment facility for your loved one may seem like an overwhelming task. However, there are steps you can take to carefully evaluate and choose which facility may be the best choice for your son, daughter or loved one.

When deciding whether a program is suitable for the member of your family who is suffering from some form of chemical dependency, it is important to investigate the licensing and accreditation of any program you may be investigating. Licensing and accreditation are not the same things. States vary in their licensing requirements.  Therefore, it is important to determine that they are, in fact, state licensed but to also discover what organizations have provided them with accreditation for their treatment program. It is further important to investigate the credentials and accreditation of all clinical staff, including psychologists, therapists, counselors and support staff members.

Next, one must become familiar with the program’s treatment modalities and any studies that may have been conducted that outline the success of the program’s graduates. Not only should the treatment center be using research-based treatment measures; but they should be actively tracking the success of their care and treatment. An inquiry into their patient/client ratio can give you a better understanding of the attention your addicted family member will receive with their facility and help you better evaluate the potential for success under their care.

Be sure to check if medical detox is available through their program. As this process may include side-effects that could be dangerous to your family member; it is important that you, first, learn whether detox is even offered, and second, who handles the detoxification of their patients. What are the credentials of the professionals that may be taking your son or daughter through a medically managed detox program?

As each person’s needs are unique, does this particular program offer an individualized treatment plan for each of their recovering addicts? This will give you a better understanding of how thorough their staff may be in investigating the underlying reasons for the addiction of your loved one; and show that they have the means of providing the individualized treatment care necessary to address those specific needs. Does the program address a full range of recovery needs, including medical, psychological, social, behavioral and spiritual?

What types of services are available to family members? Are there family counseling sessions available during inpatient care and additional counseling available during the outpatient phase of the recovering addict’s treatment program? Also, what exactly are the outpatient services they offer to help the recovering addict after they have exited the protective environment of the treatment center?

And finally, take time to conduct a walk-through of the facility, in order to be familiar with all physical accommodations that would be available to your family member during their recovery process.

What to Know About Detox

$
0
0
There are many common symptoms that can accompany the chemical detoxing process.
When dealing with a loved one who is battling a chemical addiction; there are safe and healthy ways to support them through the detox process.

Most substance abuse detoxification can be extremely difficult due to the excruciating withdrawal symptoms. Utilizing the services of a professionally trained staff and treatment facility is highly recommended. The physical and psychological risks of detoxing at home are dangerous to you and your loved one.

There are many common symptoms that can accompany the chemical detoxing process. Those can include obsessive thoughts of using. At the point of the detoxification, any prior decision to give up their drug of choice may have disappeared and all the addict may be thinking about of is flight. A staff experienced in all phases of the detox process can help the recovering addict through this and the other challenges of cleansing their body. During their body’s detoxification, the patient may experience insomnia, accompanied by pain and muscle aches. There may be a loss of appetite and vomiting, along with chills and excessive sweating. Any or all of these symptoms can bring about irritability, anxiety and confusion in the recovering addict.

It is imperative that the addict receives professional medical attention throughout this process. Quitting certain drugs without medical supervision can be dangerous and may even be life threatening. With a trained and experienced staff available through your chosen treatment center, the addict can receive the help, strength and immediate medical attention they may need to handle any serious withdrawal symptoms. Whether dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, tremors, seizures, and hallucination or rapid heartbeat, a team of trained medical professionals can provide the expert care necessary to make this transition as easy and short as possible.

Most facilities prohibit communication to and from the patient during the initial drug detox. This is by far the most fragile stage of the process. It can be an overwhelming and emotional process and limiting outside influences can help reduce stress and concerns during this period of recovery. It is helpful if the family members or loved ones of the addict are educated about the drug detox process. Understanding the complexities of the care your recovering addict is receiving and the further steps and processes entailed in their ongoing recovery will allow you to better support them in their healthy endeavors.

After detox, the process of understanding the underlying issues for substance abuse will begin. With a team of caring and experienced counselors and support teams, your loved one can begin the road back to recovery and their life of sobriety.

Utah Board Game Company Rocks the Tabletop with CHOPS, a Rocker’s Game

$

Kaysville, UT – November 9, 2015 – Gangrene Games, a Utah-based tabletop game company is poised to release their 4th game into the market. CHOPS, now in development by Craig Nybo (the creator of Shoot Your Friends), takes on a rock and roll theme. Players build rock bands, play gigs, and compete to become the top rocker.

Nybo says that much of the inspiration for his game comes from personal experience. He actively plays in a rock band with fellow game developers, Larry Nybo and Mike Terrell. Craig has put all of the struggles and triumphs involved in trying to “make it to the top” into CHOPS.

“There isn’t a great rock and roll themed game on the market,” said Craig. “Everyone wants to be a rock star. I don’t care if you play an instrument or not, there is a part of you that wants to get up on the stage and play in front of a million fans. CHOPS is Gangrene Games’ answer to this call.”

CHOPS has the same sense of humor Gangrene Games fans have come to expect. With musicians such as The Destroyer, Elli Glitter, and ex members of a broken up all female rock band called The Punk Cats, this rock and roll board game offers plenty of personality.

In CHOPS, players build bands and sabotage rival bands along the way. Each show venue has its own rules. Bands struggle through bar brawls, seedy club owners, demonic possessions, greedy band managers, police actions, and even alien abductions to play shows and make the cash needed to hire top musicians and arm them with killer instruments. Even more important than cash, bands can earn buzz (which takes the form of guitar pick game pieces). The band with the most buzz at the end of the game wins.

For tabletop game enthusiasts looking for a family game with tons of personality and easy-to-learn play, CHOPS just might fit the bill. Currently, CHOPS is in late development, but early buyers can support Gangrene Games on Kickstarter.com (www.kickstarter.com) to lock in the earliest copies as they roll off the press sometime in the near future.

Avignon, FR – On October 23 2015, MYLITTLEFACTORY.CO launched a Kickstarter campaign for X’TREMFISHROD, a compact fishing rod that follows you anytime anywhere for trekking, camping or street fishing and is a great addition to your survival equipment.

“This is the culmination of an idea that came while trekking in rainforest in Thailand where we walked along a river without being able to fish in case of necessity or just to enjoy fishing moments with friends,” the creators explain, “Once back home, we decided to design a fishing rod that can be easy carried in a pocket or backpack that includes the parts needed to fish in fresh and salt water.”

The distinctive design encloses all functions needed during fishing with the reel and its self-locking ring, the bobber, the lead-free sinker and the hook with its safe cap to protect you from injuries. X’TREMFISHROD also comes with a removable rod in fiber glass to make it strong, lightweight and as small as possible. For this Kickstarter campaign, the X’TREMFISHROD will be available in four colors: gray, blue, orange and green.

The X’TREMFISHROD has been developed, tested and made from high quality components selected in Provence, France. The team has already supported the development phase, now they need to cover the significant cost required for injection mold tooling, components, assembly and packaging.

“As French designers, we launched a crowdfunding campaign to promote X’TREMFISHROD™ and gather a community that can take part in this adventure, help us improve our product and share in the success of achieving the goal,” says the team, “There’s no better way of doing this than with the Kickstarter community because the platform attracts forward-thinking individuals and passionate people who really want to help make cool stuff happen. We would like to share our adventure with you.”

In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including a limited edition bobber keychain for €5, a t-shirt for €12, one X’TREMFISHROD for the special Kickstarter price of €15 and more. Backers can also pledge €30 for one X’TREMFISHROD with a custom engraving, €55 for one of each color or choose one of two limited reseller tiers.

Support The ‘90s Virgin Story on Kickstarter by Tim Chaney

London, England – Twenty years ago British video game publisher Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE) were beloved by gamers for their fluffy Lion King platformer and the explosive action titles from Cannon Fodder to Command & Conquer. But behind the scenes lay a world of hedonism, excess, and disruption that makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like an Alan Bennett drama. Former VIE Managing Director Tim Chaney played a central role in those days of ‘adrenaline-fueled rampant risk,’ leading his team of young Britpop lads and ladettes to break the rules with little regard for the consequences – or the costs.

This will be the no-holds-barred story of how the backroom team at Virgin Interactive tore up the rulebook and matched ruthless game publishing with extreme pleasure – the trashed game launch venues, the complementary sachets of dusty substances sent out to game reviewers, and the SIX video game trailers in a row banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. While standard form for rock and roll stars in the music business, the young videogame industry was still in its earliest days, and no one had seen or experienced the brash, reckless, force of VIE in its heyday. It may all seem a whirl two decades on, but Tim knows the facts and the dates, and will also relay the stories of other developers and publishers who can recall just what they got up to like Westwood Studios and Bethesda Softworks.

Visit tiny.cc/my90svirginstory and the Kickstarter campaign here to back SEX, DRUGS AND VIDEOGAMES, and snap up the chance to see exclusive material before the lawyers get to it.

“The dealer, in his white Porsche, would come to our offices as requested and set up shop in the foyer. Clubs were closed for refurbishment, wrecked after launch events. I had to wade in and apologise to a bank manager after one of the secretaries sat on the photocopier without underwear and faxed the picture to the wrong number. And man, she was cute too!” – Excerpt from Tim Chaney’s book on Kickstarter.

With plans to also adapt the raucous antics into a movie, this is a chance for you to get in on the ground floor and support Tim’s book as an early adopter on Kickstarter – you can even get a copy signed by Richard Branson.

“By 2015 video games were generating $74bn a year. We had a hand in helping that along. This book will rightly immortalize our unique legacy in this great industry of ours.” – Tim Chaney

“I would like to go to London and chop Tim Chaney off at the knees.” – Tom Dooley, Viacom COO

The Healthy Habits We Can Pass to Children

$
0
0
Help your children recognize that eating foods of different colors isn’t just for the aesthetics and fun – it has health benefits, too
As parents, we pass more than genes down to our kids.

Children pick our habits, as well – both good and bad. We can show our kids we care about them by sharing these nuggets of health advice, promoting healthy attitudes that will last long after they are under our immediate care.

  • Help your children recognize that eating foods of different colors isn’t just for the aesthetics and fun – it has health benefits, too. They can be taught to understand the nutritional benefits of including a rainbow of colorful foods in their regular diet. That does not necessarily mean that every meal has to be multicolored. But they should be made aware of the need to incorporate a range of fruits and vegetables of different hues – from red, blue and orange to yellow, green and white – into their diet.
  • There is an importance to instilling a routine of healthy breakfast in childhood. Establishing this habit in youth can help make it more likely that your child will continue this good habit as they get older. Teach them the importance of a low-fat, low-sugar breakfast in jump-kicking their brain and their energy. They need to understand that a healthy breakfast contributes to better weight maintenance and helps keep chronic diseases at bay. The medical community reports that going without breakfast correlates with four times the likelihood of obesity. The high fiber in many breakfast cereals can actually help reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Encourage your children not to be a couch potato. Support their participation in a range of outdoor activities, including swimming, gymnastics, soccer and other outdoor sports that can help them stay active. Getting them off the couch and out the door can help promote better performance in school, treat potential obesity issues, create a greater sense of self-esteem and help promote better sleep patterns at night.
  • Drink water, not soda. The message is simple: water is healthy; soft drinks are unhealthy. While your kids may not understand all of the reasons why too much sugar is bad for them, you can help them understand the basis. For example, according to the American Heart Association (AHA) the sugar in soda provides no nutrients and adds calories that lead to weight problems. Water, on the other hand, is a vital resource that humans can’t live without.
  • Family dinner is a time to bond. With hectic family schedules, it is hard to find time to sit down and enjoy a mean together. However, according to University of Florida research, sharing a family meal means that family bonds get stronger; kids are more well-adjusted; the family enjoys more nutritious meals; kids are less likely to be obese or overweight and kids are less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol.

Let’s give our kids a chance for a healthy body and mind by teaching and setting examples that provide better approaches to their world.

The True Road to Recovery With the Use of The Three-Part Program

$

For anyone who has suffered the pain of alcohol or drug addiction, recognizing that they need help with their problem and seeking that help may be their only ticket to sobriety.
Once one has become embroiled in a world where the only solution for dealing with emotional pain is to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs, the fear of living without that substance of choice is often beyond imagination.

Whether the individual is in a state of denial, still believing that they can continue using or whether they recognize that quitting is their only alternative – abstinence means such a change of lifestyle, that it seems unattainable.  Even with the potential loss of family connections, friends or employment, the addicted personality may find he or she is unable to refrain.

Chemical dependency is a form of chameleon; with the changing faces of dependency as varied as the numbers of those who have succumbed to an out-of-control state.  As a progressive disease, it can continue to worsen, even while the addicted man or woman continues to convince themselves that they have it under control.  With the assistance of a 12-Step Program, many men and women have been able to obtain freedom from the physical and emotional binds of addiction.  However, for many others, professional assistance has been needed.

For anyone who has suffered the pain of alcohol or drug addiction, recognizing that they need help with their problem and seeking that help may be their only ticket to sobriety.  For, “hard-knuckling it” by one’s self, typically ends in defeat.  If you or a family member is ready to tackle the tricky path to sobriety, finding a licensed and successful treatment facility may be the answer you seek.  Amicus House is one such place.  With a team of dedicated and trained counselors, we have been assisting those with their recoveries from addiction since 1990.  With a program that has been designed for success, a tried and true road to recovery is available with our three-part program for sobriety.

We offer a 24-hour intensive inpatient program for men and women.  While housed with our staff of experts, each patient receives the personalized treatment they seek.  With expert individual and group counseling sessions each patient is provided with the insight into the emotional triggers that are the driving force behind their addictions.  We offer group counseling that is gender specific, allowing each patient to realize that they are not alone and to glean insight from the plights of others.

In addition to the counseling and education opportunities provided during the inpatient phase of each client’s recovery path, our treatment facility also provides a transitional phase.  This includes a sober living facility as a half-way station to test their newfound world without the old substance crutches.  With the ability to return to work or school, they are restored to a near-normal living pattern, with the ongoing support of staff and community 12-step meetings.  Finally, the patient returns to their home.  However, weekly counseling sessions continue to be available, to help address those issues that arise as they try to navigate their world in a sober fashion.

Choosing A Drug Rehabilitation Facility

Amicus House – A private sector recovery program located in Northern California, we have been providing successful treatment for drug and alcohol abuse since 1990.
If you or a member of your family is suffering from substance abuse, you may have come to the stage where you realize professional care is required.

When selecting the appropriate drug/alcohol treatment facility, one of the industry’s top organizations is Amicus House. A private sector recovery program located in Northern California, we have been providing successful treatment for drug and alcohol abuse since 1990.

Offering a three-phase approach to treatment, Amicus House is proud of its 67% success rate. With 24-hour residential drug/alcohol treatment, non-medical care available, its program also includes intensive transitional and out-patient programs, for on-going assistance. The founding member of Amicus House – Lori Johnson – has earned great respect among her recovery peers.

Our first phase of 24-hour residential care includes the attention of a trained counseling staff. Our experienced and caring counselors assist each patient by developing a personalized program that includes individual counseling sessions. These sessions are designed to help our client explore the core issues that may surround their dependence on drugs or alcohol.  We also offer gender specific group counseling sessions to further provide each patient with the tools necessary to deal with challenges they may experience when dealing with family, friends or work.  During the course of a patient’s stay, they will receive HIV education and disease concepts, relapse prevention solutions, behavior modification choices, along with life skills options.

Amicus House recognizes that immediately returning a patient to their former environment after completing the inpatient treatment part of their care may be a set-up for failure. For that reason, we offer a transitional living opportunity in a clean and sober environment, during which time they can practice the skills they learned while completing their inpatient stay. During this phase of their treatment, they are able to return to work, go to school or assist at a local volunteer program, while enjoying continuing interaction with counseling staff. All patients are encouraged to attend local 12-step recovery meetings in a community setting.

The final, after-care part of the recovery program includes weekly counseling sessions, during which time the patient is provided with ongoing support and relapse prevention by members of our trained team.  All three phases of our drug and alcohol treatment program are designed with a goal of stabilizing the health and wellbeing of the patient.  Our program also recognizes the need for including family members in our counseling program, in order to ensure a lasting solution for individual sobriety and family harmony.

What Does Relapse Mean to an Addict?

$
0
0
One of the largest obstacles facing those with histories of substance abuse is the idea that a relapse indicates their failure to get clean.
Many families of addicted teens, men or women fear that their family member walks on a path of egg-shells.

With the fear that they will resort to return to substance abuse as a coping mechanism, they wonder if or when a relapse may occur.  And should their recovering addict have suffered a relapse into the use of drugs or alcohol; what does this mean to their recovery success?

In fact, one of the largest obstacles facing those with histories of substance abuse is the idea that a relapse indicates their failure to get clean.  Should a recovering addict suffer a relapse, their family or friends often reflect that all former efforts for sobriety were of little value and they do not deserve a second chance.  A decidedly critical and callous attitude; it is actually incorrect.  Rather than a collapse of the recovering addict’s war with addiction; relapse simply becomes another challenge that they must overcome.  Recognizing that relapse is, indeed, a serious event in the lives of those seeking a life of health and sobriety; their life-long journey toward health extends much further than that.

A family that has been impacted in some way by the side-effects of substance abuse has probably gone through the relapse of a relative or loved one.  The National Institute on Drug Abuse has explained that this is not an indication that the person with the substance abuse history has squandered their last hope for sobriety.  In reality, the relapse rate for people who have completed a drug treatment program is roughly in line with patients who had sought medical care for Type 1 diabetes, hypertension or asthma.  However, when a patient needs follow-up care for one of these physical disorders, or additional treatment for high blood pressure, they usually receive overwhelming support.

Contrary to other medical issues, when a person with a history of substance abuse relapses back into old habits; this act is not recognized as a medical event, but seen as a bad choice.  Recognizing the true nature of the relapse can make it easier for people to move through the event and return to treatment.  In fact, many factors can come into play which may lead people into relapse.  The differences between outpatient and inpatient treatment settings may not meet the needs of the lifestyle of the person in recovery, making a relapse the inevitable result.  Certain treatment centers may not be equipped with the right facilities or staff of specialists to deal with issues related to a rare drug.

Involvement in a residential treatment program that provides intensive outpatient support programs can help prevent relapse of the recovering addict.  With a program that involves ongoing individual and group therapy forums, family therapy sessions, continued education for modification of behavior and other 12-step community support opportunities, the client is provided a platform for continued recovery success.

Does Obesity Come With a Social Stigma?

$
0
0
Public health campaigns branding obesity as a disease are sometimes perceived as criticizing individuals, rather than expressing the environmental and social factors that lead to weight gain.
Research has found a significant prejudice against fat people.

Whether functioning in the general community, in school or in the workplace, men, women and children with overweight problems are being targeted by a community that, neither understands, nor sympathizes with their condition. Along with obesity being seen as a serious public health threat; there is a growing prejudice against fat people.

Thinness has come to symbolize important values in our society. Being thin has become attached to discipline, hard work, ambition and willpower in the minds of the public.  If you are not thin; then you don’t have these traits. The media also significantly promotes the idea that the only way to be attractive is to be thin. Models are captured with Twiggy-like bodies and celebrities are exhibiting photo-shopped pictures of themselves, in order to perpetuate their image of thinness. Those that do not have naturally thin bodies will often resort to extreme measures in order to reduce themselves to the size that we, as a public, have come to think represents success and beauty.

Public health campaigns branding obesity as a disease are sometimes perceived as criticizing individuals, rather than expressing the environmental and social factors that lead to weight gain. To some people, this leads to the sense that they have a license to engage in public fat-shaming. While the media portrays extremely thin as “in”, it also portrays heavy people as fat, lazy and gluttonous. Overweight people are stereotyped as engaging in out-of-control eating or bingeing on junk food. They become the target of humor or ridicule. With the amount of media the public consumes; these stereotypical representations stick.

Those that suffer from obesity struggle to deal with the oftentimes inaccurate images of who they are as individuals. Yale University recently published a study suggesting that male jurors did not administer blind justice when it came to plus-size female defendants. While female jurors displayed no prejudice against fat defendants; men – especially lean men – were more likely to slap a guilty verdict on an overweight woman and more quickly would label her a repeat offender who had an obvious predilection to repeat offenses.

Another recent study by the Center for Creative Leadership discovered that top managers suffering from weight problems were judged more harshly by their peers and seen as less effective than their slimmer colleagues and co-workers. These prejudices were attached to both their work performance and interpersonal relationships. In fact prejudices against those suffering with obesity were found “across the board.”  For example, fifty percent of doctors were found to assume that fat patients were “awkward, ugly, weak-willed and unlikely to comply with treatment.” Nearly 24 percent of nurses said they were repulsed by their obese patients. When teachers were polled, it was found that up to 30 percent of teachers said that becoming obese was “the worst thing that can happen to someone.”  More than 70 percent of obese people said that they had been ridiculed about their weight by a family member.

Ridicule of fat people shows no bounds. A political consultant who had lost 120 pounds and still had 100 more to lose, related how she was thrown off an airline flight on two different occasions, because the carrier deemed her “too fat to fly.” Both times she was stopped at the gate by airline employees, who proceeded to quiz her loudly about her weight and dress size before denying her boarding access.

Those suffering from overweight issues listen to bystanders refer to them as whales and use other derogative terms, often while looking directly at them. People have no qualms about aiming overt cruelty at obese people, because there are few consequences. The fat stigma is rarely challenged and often ignored. In effect, it is the last acceptable prejudice. With no federal laws on the books that make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of body weight, this sends a message that it’s no big deal.

The public reflects a belief that obesity is a temporary condition, completely under an individual’s control. Fat people receive no sympathy, even from others struggling with their own weight issues. Even as obesity rates continue to soar, rarely does there seem to be an understanding of or sympathy for the issues that surround this disease.

A Healthy Body Improves Our Emotional Health

$

Dietary changes have even been suggested for children with ADHD or autism, with positive results.
Many of us do not really appreciate that we actually are what we eat. Scientific research shows that eating healthy can not only improve the physical appearance of our body, but it can drastically change our mood and improve our way of life.

By fueling our bodies with the healthy foods choices that can produce a well-oiled working machine, we also allow our minds and emotions to benefit from the effects of a proper diet.

The importance of food choices when it comes to our mental health cannot be overstated. In a real sense, we have two brains – one in our head and one in our gut. These two systems are connected via the vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve that runs from the brain stem down to our abdomen. It is now well established that the vagus nerve is the primary route our gut bacteria use to transmit information to our brain. Maintaining optimal gut health is therefore paramount when trying to address our mental state.

When exploring mood-changing food items, we have learned that food allergies or intolerances can greatly affect our mood. For example, if we have a gluten allergy or intolerance, consumption of the gluten that is found largely in wheat products can leave us feeling sluggish or even depressed. Dietary changes have even been suggested for children with ADHD or autism, with positive results. Artificial food ingredients, the artificial sweetener aspartame, in particular, can wreak havoc with our brain function. Both depression and panic attacks are known potential side effects of aspartame consumption. Other additives, such as artificial colorings are also known to impact mood.

Another culprit that can directly impact us by causing mood fluctuations is our blood sugar. High blood sugar can often lead to irritability; while low blood sugar can bring about feelings of anxiety, depression and lethargy. Sugar consumption also triggers a cascade of chemical reactions in our bodies that promote chronic inflammation. In the long term, inflammation disrupts the normal functioning of our immune system and wreaks havoc on our brains. Last, but no least, sugar (particularly fructose) and grains contribute to insulin and leptin resistance and impaired signaling, which also play a significant role in our mental health.

Research also suggests that low levels of vitamins, mineral deficiencies, and low intake of fatty acids and omega-3s can contribute to altered moods and mimic various mental health issues. Some believe that these deficiencies actually cause mental health issues. Insufficient levels of vitamin D, in particular, can lead to mood swings, depression and fatigue. If we have any deficiencies, our mood may be improved simply by adding supplements.

If you are interested in exploring how food may be affecting your moods, keep a food diary for at least two weeks. Record everything you eat and drink and your moods before and after. It may sound tedious, but it is beneficial. If you notice a pattern, you may wish to seek a nutritionist or experienced health care provider to assist you in making the necessary changes. Since diets should be individualized, you will want to make sure the changes you are making are appropriate and healthy for you.

How Exercising Guarantees the Body is Functioning within Healthy Exercise Parameters

$

Moderate aerobic exercise includes such activities as brisk walking, swimming and mowing the lawn.
How much exercise is enough to guarantee that your body is functioning within healthy exercise parameters?

There is a direct correlation between people who need to exercise for 30 minutes a day and others who require 90 minutes of exercises. In January 2005, the US Government released a new set of dietary guidelines, essentially telling us that as Americans get bigger; so does the length of time we need to be physically active.

The guidelines from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services have simplified it by saying that at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity is required to reduce the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. However, for some, that is only the beginning. But, in addition to the length of time recommended for physical exercise, the US Government also set out guidelines of the types of exercises children and adults should be focusing on in order to promote a more healthy physical body.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends these following guidelines for most healthy adults:

  • Aerobic Exercise: It is recommended that we get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity. You can also do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Regardless of the form of moderate or vigorous aerobic activity chosen, the guidelines suggest that you conduct these workouts over the course of a week, rather than within a shorter, concentrated period of time.
  • Strength Training: It is recommended that you perform strength training exercises at least twice a week. No specific amount of time for each strength training session is included in the guidelines. However, in order to build muscle, it is recommended that you lift weights three times a week, and perform cardio on the opposite days.

Moderate aerobic exercise includes such activities as brisk walking, swimming and mowing the lawn. Vigorous aerobic exercise includes such activities as running and aerobic dancing. Strength training can include use of weight machines or activities such as rock climbing or heavy gardening.

As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. However, if your goal is losing weight or meeting specific fitness goals; you may need to exercise more. By ramping up your exercise time to 300 minutes a week, incorporating moderate exercise, vigorous exercise and a program of strength training; these can help you achieve even greater health benefits.

THCClean Reports Record Popularity As More People Seek Proven THC Detox Methods

$

THCClean.net is a website dedicated to helping marijuana users pass their drug tests by cleansing the THC from their bodies, and has quickly gained popularity online.

THC is the active ingredient in Marijuana, and traces of this chemical can still be found in blood, urine and even hair follicles for months after the last time someone used marijuana. Drugs tests are becoming an increasingly common screening practice for employers. As such, a huge number of people now need to purge THC from their systems every month. THCClean, covering not only urine tests, reveals how simple it really is.

THC Clean offers people comprehensive information on how to effectively complete a THC detox, including guidelines on what lifestyle choices to make as well as what products claim to help. These products have been individually reviewed and the best quality items recommended to readers for help in purging the body of toxins. There’s also guidance on the most effective way to prepare for the accurate and dreaded hair follicle test.

The site also offers information on home use drug tests so individuals can confirm they are clear before submitting themselves to the employee tests. If all else fails, the site offers advice on synthetic urine that can be used to fake a urine test result.

A spokesperson for THCClean explained, “The spike in traffic to our site shows that the increasing popularity of this policy with companies is in direct opposition to sociocultural attitudes towards marijuana, which has already been legalized in an increasing number of states. While we can’t do anything about companies choosing to test their employees, we can help those employees keep their recreational choices private and prevent those choices from adversely affecting their careers and prospects. That is what we’re doing, and that is why we’re seeing large numbers of people interested in the information offered on our site every week.”

About THCClean:

THCClean is an online resource center that helps marijuana users pass their pre-employment drug tests. The site is invaluable for people who enjoy marijuana and have a drug test coming up who want to get, or keep, a job. The site is regularly updated, and is already considered an authority among users.

True North Athletics Announces a New, No-Nonsense Approach to Outdoor Sports

Excellent product reviews and information on the best places to engage in the sport an individual loves ensure consumers have what they need for outdoor fun, reports TrueNorthAthletics.com

True North Athletics announces they are taking a new, no-nonsense approach to outdoor sports. The site provides excellent product reviews to help consumers find the gear they need to participate in their favorite sport. In addition, the site offers information on the best places available for these sports, so site visitors can make informed decisions as to where to head when they wish to engage in this activity.

True North Athletics understands individuals have different preferences when it comes to sports. Some prefer high adrenaline activities, such as climbing, yet others choose a more sedate activity, like yoga. For this reason, the website now covers a variety of sports to ensure the needs of all visitors are met. Individuals who visit the site find they can learn more about their favorite sport, what to eat while out on the trail, how to purchase a mountain bike helmet and more,” Eric, spokesperson for True North Athletics (http://www.truenorthathletics.com/), reports.

According to Statista.com, 57.6 million individuals participated in running, jogging and trail running activities in 2013. In addition, 36 million opted to engage in car, backyard and/or RV camping, and 46.6 million participated in road biking, mountain biking and BMX. The report also shows 34.38 million engaged in hiking activities. Each activity requires the purchase of gear, yet, with numerous products on the market, finding the right item may be difficult.

Individuals often find they make a purchase only to be disappointed once they begin to use the product. True North Athletics wishes to make the buying process easier for consumers, and offers comprehensive reviews on a wide variety of products. These reviews help consumers make informed choices when it comes to their gear, whether they are purchasing a mountain bike, a camping tent or rock climbing pants, Eric continues.

Engaging in a sport may become boring over time, leading participants to feel they need a change of scenery. Travel tends to be expensive, however, thus participants in a sport need to take the time to research different locations. Doing so allows a person to find the right venue for their sport, one that challenges them to expand their horizons while doing what they love.

“Visitors to True North Athletics find the site offers information on various sporting venues for a number of recreational activities. When a person visits the site, they can read about the five best hikes in Washington, free camping venues in California, rock climbing in Denver and more. With the help of the site, a person can easily find a new location where they can engage in the sport and have a great time while doing so. This is one site every outdoor enthusiast needs to explore,” Eric declares.
